These Terms of Service and any other services terms ("terms", "statements", or "agreements") describe the conditions on which Chronicle LLC ("we", "us", "staff", or "our") offers you ("customer", "user", or "you") access to our services,, and mobile apps ("Chronicle", "website", "system", "app", or "services").

Acceptance of These Terms

By using Chronicle or, you agree to abide by these Terms and Privacy statements. If you do not agree to these Terms, you may not access any part of the Chronicle app or website. You must be 18 years or older to access these services, or 13 years or older with your parent or legal guardian’s permission.

Changes to These Terms

We may make changes to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy from time to time as needed. The date of the most recent change will be posted. It is your responsibility to periodically check for updates to these agreements. We will publish a notice for major updates (as determined by Chronicle staff) to these Terms.

Description of the Service

Chronicle is a service which hosts your stories, comments, and other reading activity. Registered users ("readers" or "members") may contribute reactions or other activity ("activity") through their use of the app. Authors may contribute stories and other content through the website, contests, or story submission email address. Contributions and activity on the service may be accessible through the website and app. Unregistered users may also access the service to read and share stories pending their acceptance of these terms.

New versions of the app, updates to the website, and new ways to access the service may be released over time. These new versions will be subject to the same terms and may have additional terms of their own.

Your Account with Chronicle

You do not have to have an account to use the website or mobile app. However, access to certain parts of the service may be limited to certain users depending on various account status. Your full name, a valid email address, and login information are all required to register an account with Chronicle. This information is all protected under our Privacy Policy. You are responsible for maintaining that your email address is valid and your login information private. If your login information is compromised, it is your responsibility to update it as soon as possible. You are responsible for all activity under your account, whether or not you authorized the activity.

We reserve the right to disable, cancel, or delete your account at our discretion due to any of the following reasons: violation of any of this agreement, activity infringing on the rights of any third party, or of any applicable laws or regulations.

You may elect to terminate your account with us by deleting your account and ceasing to use our services. Your account status will be lost if you delete your account. If you were a member or subscriber to any services, we cannot offer any refund partial time for those services. Deleting the mobile app is not the same as deleting your account with us.

Using Chronicle

Subject to your compliance to these Terms, Chronicle grants you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, revocable, non-assignable, and non-transferrable license to use the Service in order to view content available on and the mobile apps. Certain portions of the service may be limited to users with an account, and other portions may be limited depending on your account status, such as whether you have an active membership with Chronicle. In addition to exclusive content, your account status may grant you other abilities within the service, such as the ability to maintain a profile, respond to stories, and access to new features as they may be released.

The above license is subject to your strict adherence to the Terms of Service plus the following terms:

  • You may not copy, reproduce, or otherwise replicate any content within the service

  • You may not adapt or replicate stories without the author(s)’ express permission

  • You may not use any part of the content or service with the intention of replicating any part of Chronicle or the content offered within the service

  • You may not access paid sections of the service without paying the subscription fee

  • You may not, and may not allow any third-party to, attempt to tamper with, reverse-engineer, copy, adapt, decompile, or otherwise access the source code or infrastructure supporting the service, app, or website

  • You may not attempt to redistribute or otherwise replicate the services Chronicle provides

  • You must show respect of other readers, authors, and users of the service

  • You must have rights to any material you post, including profile pictures or other content

  • You may not impersonate others or misrepresent yourself anywhere on the service

  • You may not sell or transfer your license to use the service

  • You may not collect or attempt to collect any information, such as personal data, of other readers, authors, or users of the service using scraping or any other technique

  • You may not violate any data security measures employed by Chronicle or its affiliates to access any data or accounts you are not intended to use

You agree to comply with the above conditions at all times. Chronicle has the right to terminate your account or otherwise suspend your use of the service at its sole discretion or take any other action as we see fit if you breach any of the above or other terms listed. Without limitation of any other rights or remedies under the Terms of Service, Chronicle reserves the right to investigate any situation where any of the terms have been violated, and may submit or report information in cooperation with applicable law enforcement authorities in prosecution of any users or third-parties participating in any violation of the terms or any applicable laws or regulations.


Chronicle may sell standalone products or subscriptions to part or all of its service. Your purchase of these items affords you the limited revocable right to access the corresponding parts of the service. You may cancel your subscription at any time, but no refund will be offered for prorated time of any such subscription. Similarly, Chronicle cannot offer refunds for other products or parts of the service purchased except at the sole discretion of Chronicle’s staff. Chronicle reserves the right to suspend, alter, or terminate the services it offers. In cases where a product or subscription becomes invalidated by such a change, Chronicle will take reasonable measures to notify customers in advance. Chronicle reserves the right to alter the price of any of its products, subscriptions, or service at any time, including those you may have paid for or are subscribing to. This may include promotional pricing, price increases, addition, removal, or alteration of features or other price or service adjustments. The price you agree to upon time of purchase is the price you pay.


The Chronicle service, app, website, and other associated materials are provided as-is, as-available, and with-all-faults without warranty or guarantee of any kind.

The Chronicle staff will employ reasonable effort to repair and maintain the service and all associated materials within their means. While we will make a reasonable effort to mitigate or fix any defects reported at our own discretion, we reserve the right to not fix defects at our own discretion. While Chronicle will make a reasonable effort to secure the service and its associated operations and usage, we can not guarantee said security or prevent any harmful results of using our services. We do not warrant that your use of the service is lawful in any particular jurisdiction.

Chronicle and its partners, subsidiaries, and successors and their employees, owners, shareholders, or other agents disclaim any foregoing warranty, expressed here or otherwise, to the fullest extent permitted by the law. This includes any express or implied warranties of non-infringement, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose without limitation.

If the law of applicable jurisdiction limits or prohibits this disclaimer of warranty, this disclaimer shall be limited or prohibited to the extent the jurisdiction applies to this agreement.

Limitation of Liability

Chronicle and its partners, subsidiaries, and successors and their employees, owners, shareholders, or other agents shall have no liability for any loss or damage arising from:

  • Your inability to access the service, intentional by relevant parties or otherwise

  • Any action taken against you by third-party rightsholders for infringement or other claims

  • Any investigation by relevant parties or law enforcement authority regarding the use of the service

  • Any errors, deficiencies, or omissions in the service, technical, design, or otherwise

  • Any misconduct of the service by other users or third-parties

  • Any loss or damage to any data, device hardware, or software

  • Any loss of profit or other opportunity resultant from your use of the service

Any action or claim must be made with Chronicle as soon as possible.

Applicable law may disallow this limitation of liability depending on the jurisdiction. In this case, you agree that such limitations reflect a reasonable distribution of risk between you and Chronicle, and that Chronicle’s liability be limited to the extent permitted by the relevant jurisdiction. These terms or any liability may be limited or excluded by applicable law.


You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Chronicle and its partners, subsidiaries, and successors and their employees, owners, shareholders, or other agents from and against any and all claims, obligations, damages, losses, expenses, and costs, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, resulting from:

  • Any violation of these terms

  • Any third-party claim of copyright infringement or invasion of privacy resulting from your use of or contribution to the service

  • Any activity related to your use of the service or associated with your account with the service unless the activity was intentionally caused by Chronicle


If one or more portions of these terms is found invalid, void, or unlawful, those portions shall be severable and shall not affect the validity or enforceability of the rest of the terms.


Except where required by applicable jurisdictions, this agreement is subject to the laws of the state of Minnesota and the United States. You and Chronicle both agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the court of Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States for resolution of any dispute, action, or proceeding arising in connection with this agreement.

Thank you for your interest in writing for chronicle. Our goal is to enable you to tell your story and help your work get discovered by a world of readers. You keep the rights to your story, and we'll do our best to promote it.

Author terms last updated October 3, 2017

Your stories are published to the service at the discretion of the Chronicle staff. Your partnership with us to host stories is granted upon your content being published and available on the service. Upon publishing, you retain all rights and responsibilities to your content. Chronicle’s hosting of your stories is subject to your adherence to the rest of the Terms of Service plus the following terms:

  • The content belongs to you, you are the copyright holder, you have distribution rights, or you have written permission from the distributor or copyright holder to publish this content

  • You grant us permission to publish, distribute, or otherwise host this content within our service

  • You may not contribute to or incite activity that is or may be considered illegal by any applicable laws or regulations

  • Content which is found to be infringing on the copyright or trademark of any party is strictly prohibited

  • The content must be respectful of other people, including those not involved in any way with Chronicle. Content that is abusive, libelous, discriminatory, obscene, or otherwise found unacceptable by Chronicle staff or its users is not permitted

  • You accept legal responsibility for your content
  • Chronicle has the right to make minor updates to your content, such as grammar, spelling, and formatting adjustments

  • For any changes to content, including the changing of titles, full rewriting of sentences, or other major edits, we will seek final approval from you before publishing

  • You may not impersonate others or misrepresent yourself, in your content or otherwise

  • Chronicle may use your name and content in marketing materials such as screenshots of the app

  • Your name or pen name will be published with the content

  • Chronicle does not pay royalties at this time

Your License with Chronicle

By publishing on Chronicle, you grant us a non-exclusive, indefinite license to host and publish your content. This license may be terminated at any time via email communication.
Chronicle has the right to publish or not publish your content in any representation at its discretion. This includes meta data such as Highlights, representing the story in different ways throughout the app, and managing when the story is available to readers. Your story may only be available in paid sections of our app.
If you ask Chronicle to remove your content from our hosting service and terminate your license, we will happily comply within 3 business days.

Chronicle does not monetize your information.

We made Chronicle not only as a celebration of fiction for the smartphone age, but as a model for how we think a modern company should operate. We don't serve ads, and we don't sell your information. Your membership is what makes our business possible. 

The only information we collect is what you see in your profile. If you'd like us to provide our data about you or close your account with us, send us a message here and we'll get back to you within one business day.

We use state of the art technology to protect your privacy and data kept with our service.

Your login information is secure with Chronicle. We use the latest encryption technologies, and your password is stored using one-way cryptography so nobody can read it.

Some information, such as your pen name as an author or your reader profile, can be shared and viewed by others.

We collect basic usage information in a secure log deleted after one year. Any information collected will remain private between you and Chronicle, except for anonymized information provided to story authors. We do not sell your information to third-parties.

Chronicle will comply with law enforcement for investigations within their jurisdiction where Chronicle also falls into that jurisdiction and they have a warrant to access such information.
